There are very traditional lighting companies, there are very contemporary companies, and there are very playful companies that do kitschy, trendy things. What we provide is a kind of comfortable elegance. The niche we fill is fresh, cleaned-up traditional. We're fashion forward without being trendy. It's a subtle dance for us. Using decorative floor lamps, torchiere lamp shades, and daylight desk lamps allow us to offer elegant lighting solutions while maintaining flexibility.
Everything we do we base on very old, classic styles. We're not reinventing any wheels. We're updating classics and cleaning them up, helping people become a little more creative with lighting without making anyone uncomfortable.
Materials compose a big part of the updating, like cast bronze with a black or chocolate patina. We also use hand-blown glass, seagrass and porcelain. Mother of pearl has been incredibly successful for us. It makes a statement, but also keeps people somewhat comfortable. Our torchiere lamp shades are capable of making a statement while maintaining continuity. We offer a wide variety of decorative floor lamps as well as daylight desk lamps, which provide a room with task and accent lighting to give you a vast array of lighting solutions for any given area of your home.
We try to think out of the box and push the boundaries on shades that you can have beautiful colors and patterns without being wild and competing with the upholstery and the walls and the carpets. That has been a huge thing for us. Our torchiere lamp shades are both bold and classic. They make a statement without calling too much attention to the shade itself.
Creating lighting plans that offer flexibility is important. Having different configurations that include task oriented overhead fixtures, decorative floor lamps, and even daylight desk lamps, gives you a more comprehensive lighting plan, for any and all situations.
I'm very happy to say that I never bought into the whole beaded thing. It was way too busy and over the top – just too drippy for me. It doesn't mean that I like very, very contemporary or modern pieces only, but I do like a clean line. It's about the purity of the bases. The shapes sell themselves. This is what our taste is and what we love to look at.
We try to keep our designs fresh, but if you're too trendy, that isn't good either. Then you only want to keep a lamp for a very short period. It's like gauchos or some kind of groovy thing that happened for a month. People want to feel they're spending money on something they could keep for a very long time. They want a lamp that's substantial, that makes a statement in the home but doesn't compete with other things in the room. A lamp should be a definite complement. I try very hard to just have things that are easy on the eye
